Ken Arterbury announced his intent to circulate a petition for Cooke County Appraisal District to lower appraisal values to reflect contemporary declines in property values.

Property Values have declined nationally about 11% in the last year and significantly more in some areas.  Ken wants Cooke CAD to reassess our properties to reflect their lower values, so that our taxes reflect the current market rates.

Ken Arterbury has decided to circulate a petition for Cooke County Citizens to ask the Cooke County Appraisal District to lower our property values to reflect current property values and the housing slump.  As you may recall, Ken Arterbury circulated a petition a couple years ago to force the County and City of Gainesville to freeze senior citizen taxes.  The County Commissioners and City could have done it without requiring a referendum but they wanted the tax money and declined.

Ken successfully circulated the petition forcing the County & City to call a referendum election on the question of the senior citizen tax freeze.  Those referendums passed by an overwhelming majority vote of 82%.

Ken continues to work hard to keep taxes down, especially for senior citizens.  He believes as homeowners are being squeezed with the recession, their taxes should not continue to go up.  Government needs to learn to live on a budget, just like every family does.

Ken feels the County should not be taking on expensive cosmetic projects such as the announced Cooke County Courthouse renovation.

If you would like to sign or help circulate the petition, please contact Ken Arterbury @ 940-768-8957 or send an e-mail to keeptaxesdown@cookecitizens.org.
